But, <a href=\"http:\/\/rsif.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/9\/75\/2527\">recent studies<\/a> have shown that critical slowing down can sometimes be quite difficult to detect. We sought to determine how temporal and spatial sampling &#8212; i.e., the introduction of observation error &#8212; affects the detectability of critical slowing down. A new paper, led by Chris Clements from the University of Zurich reports on this study. Simulations showed that sampling\u00a0a\u00a0portion of\u00a0space significantly diminishes the detectability of critical slowing down. Interestingly, reducing the frequency of sampling in time had much less dramatic effects. A re-analysis, using increasingly corrupted versions of\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/datadryad.org\/resource\/doi:10.5061\/dryad.q3p64\">data<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v467\/n7314\/full\/nature09389.html\">Drake &amp; Griffen (2010)<\/a> was consistent with these simulations.
