Such estimates may in some cases provide signals that the system generating\u00a0the data is approaching a regime shift.\u00a0Regime shifts are marked changes in the dynamics of a system that may sometimes\u00a0be modeled as bifurcations of dynamical systems. Examples of such\u00a0regime shifts in nature\u00a0include the\u00a0eutrophication of\u00a0lakes, changes in climate, and the emergence or eradication of infectious diseases. Because these methods are\u00a0based on generic properties of dynamical systems, they have the potential\u00a0to apply to a broad range of models.
